Aerosols in dentistry

This video, recorded by Prof Ross Hobson (which has its limitations and isn’t perfect) was undertaken using a dental manikin and Fluorescein UV active dye and UV light to visualise the extent of dental aerosol outside the mouth.

It can be seen that using 3:1 and with high speed & water that there is little aerosol outside the mouth.

With high volume suction it is minimal, even immediately around the mouth there is little dyed water deposited. The chair, floor etc adjacent to the manikin had no visible dyed water under normal light or UV light.

We think this video is an excellent demonstration of how aerosols are spread using current equipment that dental clinics have in place.
